A Place to Belong
Written by Marisela Treviño Orta
Directed by Kinan Valdez
Choreographed by Vanessa Sanchez

Inspired by real-life stories of San Francisco Bay Area teens, A Place to Belong follows a day in the life of a group of youth as they navigate the effects of gentrification, LGBTQIA+ intolerance, and systemic discrimination in the Bay Area. Taking us from the streets of Oakland to the murals of San Francisco's Mission District, to the busking dance crews on BART trains, this work addresses what it means to feel like you don’t belong in a place you call home. In this Theater and Dance co-production, collaborators Kinan Valdez, director, and Vanessa Sanchez, choreographer, incorporate movement, percussive dance arrangements, and music to tell the stories of youth. By combining spoken word, technology, tap dance, and the Fandango tradition of son jarocho (from Veracruz, Mexico), A Place to Belong celebrates the resilience and resistance of lived experiences and survival.
